2010 Bishop Japheth Omucheyi from Kenya
On Sunday, October 17, 2010 Bishop Japheth Omucheyi from Kenya, East Africa visited The Sanctuary bearing gifts from the children of Overcoming Faith Centre Baptist Churches of Kenya and Uganda. Several months prior, the Bishop met Pastor Newman at the Progressive National Baptist Church Convention in Orlando, Florida where he approached him with a very special request.
In a setting of hundreds of distinguished pastors and others in attendance at this monumental event, Bishop Omucheyi approached Pastor Newman, who had just delivered a powerful message to the audience, and asked that he accept the challenge of pastoring sixty (60) churches located in Kenya and Uganda. Humbled by the request, Pastor Newman after much prayer, thought and consideration, agreed without hesitation to be the United States leader to these churches. With no disrespect intended, while some seek the office of Bishop, in Pastor Newman’s case, the office sought him.
On his visit to The Sanctuary, Bishop Omucheyi brought a hand-carved rod of covenant to be given as a token of love and affection from the children when their American pastor had been found. The selection is not without responsibility, as the churches in the continent of Africa have great needs. The immediate future for Pastor Newman includes a pastoral visit to Kenya where he will get to see first-hand the needs of the churches in that area. As he learns the needs of the Kenyan and Ugandan churches, Pastor Newman will certainly inspire others to do as Christ as compelled those who know Him; go into the world and spread the gospel.
The opportunity to do ministry on this level is not lost, as the vision and mission of Pastor Newman has been and is consistently, the integration of faith and life.
