INTEGRATING FAITH AND LIFE
The Sanctuary @ Mt. Calvary is a ministry that practices the integration of faith and life. As a part of what the ministry does, community outreach and assistance is its primary focus. The ministry operates on the principle of teaching a man to fish after he has been given a fish to eat. In that regard, the ministry provides the following services:
Weekly food and clothing giveaway to the community where anyone who comes is given enough food for a family of four (4) and is provided the opportunity to receive any clothing that they are able to use from the clothing closet.
Thanksgiving Giveaway - during the past, the ministry consistently fed approximately twenty-five (25) families by providing the food and preparation for a complete Thanksgiving meal. Recently, with the economic changes, the ministry has provided food for more than four-hundred (400) families. Families selected by guidance counselors at Duval County Schools who are given vouchers to provide to families. The families only have to come to The Sanctuary on the day of the event to pick up their Thanksgiving Box. We encourage area businesses to partner with us, allowing them for their financial support to include their marketing information within each of the boxes as well allowing them the opportunity to assist with the distribution.
Christmas Angel Tree - because a significant number of the families in our community are economically challenged, the ministry works with pre-selected organizations to fill the Christmas wishes of the individuals they serve. In the past we have partnered with the local schools and the partners of the congregation do all the shopping, getting as many of the items on the wish list as they can. Some of the partners take a number of the items to their jobs, which allows persons not specifically connected to our ministry to participate. The ministry also took advantage of the relationships of some of our partners and met the needs of several families within the community as well as partners within the congregation who could assistance.
Red Cross of Northeast Florida - as a part of the emergency preparedness of our community, we are a contracted Red Cross Emergency Shelter and relief agency. We provide emergency shelter services when called upon by the Red Cross. We are one of the first-call agencies for provision of food and clothing to families who have been burned out or have been put out of their homes through no fault of their own.
Second Harvest Emergency Food Bank - The ministry is a certified emergency food bank and upon call from members of the community who have been provided ministry contact information, will provide food to feed at least a family of four.
Education Summit - Each year prior to the start of the school year, our Education Ministry provides a City-wide Education Summit. Included is information for students and parents, with speakers from the School Board, the classroom, after-school care providers and tutoring providers. We reach out to teachers and schools and solicit their participation. At the conclusion of the summit, lunch is provided and each student is given a backpack with age appropriate materials inside.
Summer Camp - Each year, as school ends, the ministry provides a safe place for children ages 3 - 15 for a nominal fee. The summer education enrichment camp runs from 6:30 - 6:00 and includes weekly field trips and lots of hands-on learning activities.
